This is my second go at the film Hereditary. The first time I didn’t watch it straight through but watched it over a couple and maybe even a few nights. I didn’t like it.
I decided to give it another go because Ari Aster’s other film Midsommar was such a surprisingly good film. I went into that one not knowing anything about the story, not even seeing a trailer. Didn't even know Ari Aster had done the film. After watching Midsummer I wondered if I had missed something about Hereditary on the first watch?
Yes I did!
Toni Collette (The Sixth Sense, Little Miss Sunshine), Alex Wolff (My Friend Dahmer), Milly Shapiro & Gabriel Byrne (The Usual Suspects, Millers Crossing) killed it. The emotional agony this family goes through in the film is truly terrifying and this is a film that holds up for multiple viewings. If you haven’t watched Asters films give them a go, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. Asters new film is a remake of a Korean film called Save the Green Planet. This time he is teaming up with the studio that made Parasite.
